Redwood City Señors Softball Club Minutes for November 7, 2019 Board of Directors Meeting

The November 2019 meeting was called to order at 7:08 PM by President, Dennis Logie. Board members present were Dennis, Steve Bowerman, Rick Bowlby, Pete Lewis, Pat Michael, Bill Picht, Dave Reck, Angelo Rizzato, and Hiro Tarumi.

Guest: Pete Kutch

1. The October 2019 Board of Directors Meeting Minutes were reviewed and approved. Minutes are sent to all Directors, posted to the Club website, and sent to Donna O’Farrell for historical recording.

2. The October 2019 Treasurer’s Report was reviewed and approved as submitted by Treasurer, Angelo Rizzato. Angelo pointed out a reimbursement to the bank for a withdrawal that was mistakenly taken out and a bank deposit for soda that was not consumed at the 1 Pitch Tournament. Angelo also reported that the 1 Pitch had a $730 loss.

3. Recap on One Pitch Tournament – By the time the last game was over, several food items had run out. It appears that some guests went back more than once for food causing us to run out of some items. Maybe next year we will go to a food ticket system. More discussion later prior to next year’s 1 Pitch Tournament.

4. Holiday Party – Pete Kutch handed out an update showing the Club will provide its own dessert bar. This will reduce caterer costs. Pete says the caterer, The Carvery, has been very accommodating with this change. Auction/Raffle items are slowly being contributed with many more expected soon. Dennis will send out an email reminding the Club membership of the party date and to solicit auction/raffle items. Pat will itemize the items we have so far and get the list to Randy Schwartz, who is the auction/raffle item coordinator. Pete has arranged the party program to allow the caterer to reduce the labor hours needed. The caterer will send a revised contract soon.

5. Saturday League – Redwood City has informed the Club that Hawes Park will not be available before noon on November 16 and 23. Pete Lewis revised his original schedule that had games beginning at 9:00 to begin at 12:00 or 12:30. Schedules showed doubleheaders and single games. The Board favored the single game schedule for the 1st 2 weeks, with games beginning at 12:15 and going 9 innings. On November 30, the schedule will return to normal, with double header games starting at 9:00 and go 7 innings. Pete wants to make sure games are competitive so that lower level teams are allowed bats hotter than the bats the upper level teams are allowed to use.

6. 2020 Tournament Date - Bill has provided the NCSSA our preferred date of June 27-28, 2020. The Board is concerned that the SSUSA/CAN-SIRS Nor Cal State Championship Tournament on the same weekend will draw teams away from the Redwood City tournament. Having the tournament on Father’s Day weekend, June 20-21, was discussed but for now the Club will plan for June 27-28. Angelo expressed a strong desire for the NCSSA to not have other tournaments on that weekend since our tournament is a key event and is the only tournament we host. Other tournament directors have multiple tournaments and can have other weekends. We are somewhat limited because of the Red Morton Park usage by Little League and soccer teams.

7. Fall Night League – Going well with about 26 players showing up for the Monday night games at Hawes Park

8. Election Planning – Dennis will send out an email to the membership announcing the Annual Meeting on January 9, 2020 and soliciting nominations for the 2020 Board of Directors.

9. Woodruff tribute luncheon – On October 29, members gathered at Harry’s Hofbrau to honor Carl Woodruff as he retires from playing softball. Many ‘old’ friends were there that Carl had not seen in a while. Dennis made some introductory remarks and Carl gave a very nice emotional talk. This event was not meant to set a precedent. The Club will have similar events based on the situation of the person to be honored.

10. Emergency numbers – Pat says the Emergency Contact List at Day Play is about 30% filled in. He has entered the information in the computer and placed the list in the Club binder at the Bechet shed. Pete has a similar list for Night Play that needs to be filled in.

11. Round Table – Dennis says the oldest member of the Club is Ron Fredlund. Ron has his 100th birthday coming up on November 15. Pat said the speakers and mixer the Club purchased years ago have been donated to the Veterans Memorial Senior Center. Steve expressed his desire for a certified umpire at Night Play. Steve strongly feels that the presence of an umpire will improve the quality of the calls and give a better impression of the Club to new members. To be revisited in December. Angelo said there is still some ill feeling with a player stemming from an earlier incident at Day Play. The Club will pay attention for any further related problems.

The meeting adjourned at 9:23 PM. The next monthly Board Meeting is scheduled for Thursday December 12, 2019.
