Minutes for February 4, 2015 Board of Directors Meeting

The February 2015 meeting was called to order by Dennis Logie, President, at 7:05 PM. Board members present: Dennis, Steve Bowerman, Pete Lewis, Pat Michael, Bill Picht, Dave Reck, and Angelo Rizzato and Hiro Tarumi.


1. The January 2015 Board Meeting Minutes were approved as submitted. Minutes are sent to all Directors, posted to the official Club website, and sent to Donna O’Farrell for historical recording.

2. The January 2015 Treasurer’s Report was approved as submitted by the Treasurer, Angelo Rizzato.

3. Saturday League – The league is operating smoothly and the last games will be February 7.

4. Dean Perkins – Dean had suffered a stroke while visiting in Arizona and had not been able to leave. He finally was able to travel to Boise, ID and checked into an Assisted Living facility. Dean has family in Boise and most likely will not be able to return to the Bay Area to help the Club.

5. 2015 Sponsored Teams – So far there are 4 teams for possible sponsorship: Cardinals 55, Blues 65, Royals 75, and Chiefs 80. If a Chiefs 85 team gets formed, they will be sponsored.

6. Fall Night League update – The Fall season ends February 23. Pete reports that the Club has a contract with San Carlos for the use of Highlands Field for the Spring season that starts on Tuesday March 24. The Club will maintain the field as they did last year. 50 players are needed to field 4 teams. The Board will need to recruit more night players.

7. Day Play attendance – Bill reported that the average number of players at Day Play is now around 37 which often means there are enough for 4 teams to play on 2 fields.

8. New Board Members – The current Board of eight members has an opening for a ninth. The Board has approached an individual and is still awaiting a response.

9. Summer Tournament – With Red Morton fields being resurfaced starting in June, the Board has checked into other possibilities. Belmont, Menlo Park, San Mateo, San Carlos, and Hayward are not available or too expensive. Hoover is only available on Saturday but Hawes is available Thursday to Sunday. It is likely the Club will conduct a 12 team invitational tournament at Hawes with older teams playing Thursday and Friday and younger teams on the weekend. The Club needs an experienced director. Dennis Logie will try to find a Tournament Director and Bill Picht will assist the Tournament Director once named.

10. 4th July One-Pitch Tournament – This year while Red Morton fields are unavailable, the Club will have its annual One-Pitch Tournament at Hoover and Hawes fields.

11. Annual Meeting suggestions:

• Foul ball with 2 strikes not a strike out – Not enough of a significant problem to change the rule.

• Limit the placement of the pitching screen – Not enough of a significant problem to have a new rule.

• Start each at bat with 1 & 1 count – Day games have been on time so no need to change the count.

• Do away with wooden plates – the chance of tripping on it is too minimal to overcome the positives.

• Ball hitting pitching screen is a foul ball – Not enough of a significant problem to change the rule.

• Make sure Day Play starts on time, 10:00 AM – Pitchers doing a better job on limiting batting practice pitches.

• Keep widows involved in the Club – There will be an effort to invite specific widows to Club events and keep them on the mailing list.

• Too many fast runners too often – To change the substitute runner rule because one or two players stand out was not enough to make a change. Leave the rule as is but discourage using it for strategy instead of safety.

Round Table – Dennis gave a rundown on Nick Ioimo’s services. Nick passed away January 28 at 94 years old.

Meeting was adjourned at 9:20 PM.

Next Board meeting will be Thursday March 5, 2015.
