October 2013

Redwood City Señors Softball Club

Minutes for October 3, 2013 Board of Directors Meeting

The October 2013 meeting was called to order by Steve Bowerman (Acting President) at 7:05 PM. Members present: Steve, Pete Lewis, Pat Michael, Dave Reck, Angelo Rizzato and Hiro Tarumi. Absent: Bob Elwood, Lee Thompson, and Dennis Logie, President, who is away for 3 months.

1. The September Board Meeting Minutes were reviewed and approved. The minutes will be sent to all Directors, Brenda Guzman for the website, and Donna O’Farrell for historical recording.

2. The September 2013 Treasurer’s Report was reviewed and approved as submitted by Treasurer, Angelo Rizzato. Angelo anticipates expenses and income to be stagnant in the next few months. To avoid constantly transferring money to the checking account to cover small expenses, Angelo suggested we transfer $1000 from the money market to the checking account so there is enough to cover expenses for a few months. It was motioned and approved. Some expected expenses are 24 new Club hats, Night League and Day Play umpires, Hawes Park maintenance, and new balls. Angelo is still trying to get a handle on the Club inventory. The Club currently has 4 hats and 1 case of Day Play softballs.

3. Club Hat Sales – Pat has ordered 24 new Club hats with Mark Kaufmann who says they will be ready by October 7. Depending on the cost per hat, the Club will charge members who want a hat either $8 or $10.

4. Clarification of Rules for Dues – When during the year can someone pay their dues and have it be effective for the following year? It has been accepted policy of the Club to allow a prospective member to pay their dues any time after October 1 and that would cover the current year and the following year. As an alternative, players for the Fall Night League can pay their dues anytime during the fall season and it would cover the current year and the following year.

5. Day Play Ground Rules – Bechet Field has a cyclone fence partially down the right field side. An extension of this fence until it meets the right field fence, which is a cement path and soccer nets, is a ground rule double for fair hit balls. Also, any fair ball that contacts the soccer equipment against the right field fence is a ground rule double. This rule is consistent with RWC park rules.

6. Ruling on DeMarini Steel Bats – This bat at one time was disallowed by the Day Play Commissioner and then recently was re-allowed. There are several Day Players that now use this bat. The Board wants to do more research as to its safety threat and see if there was past Board action on its disapproval.

7. Holiday Party preview - Pat reported that plans for the December 7 party are moving along. Invitations will go out on October 31. Pat is asking for any raffle or auction item donations.

8. Night League Balls – This league has decided to continue use of a low compression ball. Pete will wait until Bob Cushman feels better and ask him where he purchased the balls in the past. In the meantime, the Board approved the purchase of 2 dozen balls to last through the Fall League.

9. January General Meeting – Pat handed out draft copies of letters soliciting nominations for the 2014 Board and the Notice of the 2014 Annual Meeting. All the Board members present said they intend to return for 2014. The absent members will be contacted for their intentions. The nomination request letter will go out to all email members in a few days with a deadline to submit nominations by November 23, 2013. The letter will include an emphasis on Board members being expected to attend monthly meetings. The Annual Meeting Notice will go out to all email members on December 5, 2013.

10. Roundtable – The Financial Report has a line item called Consumables that includes hats, balls and other merchandise. Angelo wants to know if there are consumables besides hats and balls. Hiro mentioned he talked to 2 Day Players about their poor conduct. Hiro also needs to get started putting together the Saturday League and is hoping Dean Perkins will again help out. The league starts in November.

Meeting was adjourned at 9:10 PM. Next Board meeting is set for Thursday November 7.

Respectfully submitted by Pat Michael, Club Secretary
